They know they are already disliked so they sacrifice the other gays who don't behave in eccentric ways for their own benefit. These people don't sacrifice their standing in society for the good of others who suffer in silence. The gays in gimp suits want to normalize their behaviour as "normal" homosexuality so that when homosexuality is accepted socially they too will be by association. The reframing of the overton window occurs here but in the opposite direction. That is a beautiful example of misdirection and manipulation. That hostility is what is counterproductive to the cause of pushing that boundary or envelope, but even more importantly, the separation of the subcultures means that one no longer can influence the Overton Window of the other (without appealing to common cultural elements for normativity - like in the realm governance). And once you get a subculture sufficiently developed, that members start feeling proud of - and especially when it's in close proximity to a "competing" subculture, you get hostility building up. ![]() Another (reactionary) group takes issue with this phenomenon, and sets to work "pushing" the Overton Window back down.Īt some point, something's got to give, and I think the result is a splitting of culture - one has a higher Overton Window, the other has a lower one. Say a group of people at the "top" of an Overton Window push to get it raised. ![]() ![]() I agree with this being the rationale, and it makes perfect sense, but there's another phenomenon at work that can work to undermine that "push" - multiple Overton Windows.
